Delete your Fireplace account
You can delete your account and its data yourself, in the app, in about a minute.
In the app (fastest)
- Open Fireplace and tap the gear icon (Settings).
- Tap Delete account.
- Type your username and enter your password.
- Tap Delete my account.
If the app is closed or loses connection part-way, the next time you open it you will see Finish deleting, and it carries on where it stopped.
If you are on a new phone, or reinstalled the app
- Install Fireplace and sign in with your username and password.
- On the screen that asks to restore your account, enter your recovery key, or choose I lost everything: start fresh.
- Then follow the steps above (Settings → Delete account).
Starting fresh gives you a new encryption identity for that phone. You do not need your old messages to delete your account.
If you cannot sign in
Fireplace has no email address or phone number on file for you, so we cannot simply confirm who you are from a message. Write to [email protected] with your username and tell us you want your account deleted. We will reply explaining how we can check the account is yours. Please never send us your password, a recovery key or a private key; we will never ask for them.
We answer privacy requests without undue delay and in any case within one month.
What is deleted
- Your sign-in account and password, your username (it becomes available to others again) and your public profile.
- Your devices, public keys and prekeys, your recovery-key backup, device-link requests and your block list.
- Every message you sent that is still stored on our servers.
- On your phone: the keys, conversations and settings Fireplace stored there.
What is not deleted, and why
- Messages other people already received stay on their phones. We cannot remove them, just as with any encrypted messenger. Messages people sent to you that are still on our servers are encrypted to keys that no longer exist, so nobody can read them; the other person's app removes the rest of that conversation when it notices your account is gone.
- Reports filed by or about your account are kept so we can deal with abuse. They hold user ids, the reason chosen, the optional note, and any message text the reporter chose to include.
- Routine infrastructure logs and backups at our hosting provider (Google Firebase) are kept for a limited time under its own terms.
